#Engage, Energize, & Educate

February 26th - March 1st

Good Afternoon Families,

On Monday, we were delighted to welcome students and staff back from Winter Break. On Thursday, students were unexpectedly surprised with leap frogs for the Leap Day from our amazing P.T.O. It certainly was a week full of renewed ENERGY!

Feinstein Golden Ticket Winner

On Tuesday, we received notification that Salvatore Carlone’s (first grader) Feinstein Golden Ticket was picked.  As a result, our school was gifted $5,000.  Additionally, Salvatore was given the choice to donate $500.00 to a non-profit organization or back to our school.  Salvatore generously chose to donate the money back to our school!

Read Across America March 4th-March 8th

  • All of Smithfield elementary schools will  recognize Read Across America (formerly Dr. Seuss Day) next week.

  • A huge thank you to Mrs. Clapprood for planning fun and educational reading activities for PVE students during their library special class time!

  • On Monday, March 4th, we will have a school-wide Drop Everything and Read time from 2:40-3:00pm

  • Monday, March 4th will be a Spirit Day! Please have your child wear red, white and blue.

A Message From Dr. Bartz

As part of the Read Across America next week, and as announced at the School Committee meeting, we will be tracking attendance by percentage of students at each school from Monday through Friday. The school with the highest percentage of students in school next week will have a "Smoothie Day" for the entire school the following week and will receive a special district recognition

School Attendance

School attendance is a powerful predictor of student outcomes. Rhode Island defines chronic absenteeism as the percentage of students who miss 10% or more of school days during the year (or two days per month). Research shows that chronic absenteeism is associated with a number of negative consequences for students, including lower achievement, disengagement from school, course failure, and an increased risk of dropping out. Attendance each day is even more critical to help get students on track in the wake of the pandemic.  We know some absences are unavoidable, but any absence makes it more difficult for children to keep up with the daily learning needed to grow and succeed. Absences may also speak to larger issues around school climate, which is why it is important schools use their data to problem solve and provide students with necessary support and interventions.
