A Message from farmer Stacie Nichols
I am very excited for this warm weather because students are going to be able to plant warm weather plants in the garden early May. You may have noticed your peas and swiss chard coming up in our school garden.
Some plants we put in the ground that have been started in a greenhouse-think tomatoes, peppers, eggplants. These are hot weather plants and with our short New England growing season we need to give these plants a head start inside. Sometimes the plant is really small, we call this a plug. Some greenhouses buy plugs to pot up, or put in larger pots to grow the plants a little bigger for sale to consumers.
Other plants like pumpkins, squash and beans can be started right in the garden as seeds. In fact, many of these plants have finicky roots that don't like to be disturbed when they are transplanted---moving a plant from a pot into their hole in the garden.
Wondering what makes a seed start to grow? Here's a short video (geared for ages K-3 although lots of good information)
Did you know that growing plants is a specific type of farming? These horticulturists support farmers by providing healthy plants to start to plant in the field. There are many agricultural support careers. Here's a short video about what it's like to be a greenhouse worker.
I am excited for what our gardens will bring this year.
