ReadyGEN, our ELA curriculum, has third-grade students examine the literal and nonliteral meanings of words in literary texts.  The third grade at LaPerche celebrated their learning of "idioms" with a parade.  See if you can find one tough cookie, cute as a button, who let the cat out of the bag, two peas in a pod and hold your horses! LaPerche teachers know how to bring learning to life!

It’s writing time in kindergarten at LaPerche. Mrs. Friel’s class is reading Life in a Pond. She modeled how to draw a pond and included all of the parts that the students shared and learned about during reading. Then, the students had time to draw their own pond with all of the important parts. Next, Mrs. Friel did a lesson on labeling, and hearing all of the sounds that are in words. She labeled her pond and the students labeled their own. Beginning writers think, draw, and then label. Next up is sentences!

So many of our teachers, like Ms. Aceto, demonstrate each day how much they care for our students. Students in this 2nd grade class decide on the type of greeting they want each morning - high 5, "scary monster," hug. Creating strong classroom communities @SmithfieldSchls

The October student council created and shared their morning affirmations. They taught the movements to the students and state them with the students each morning. Affirmations are positive statements we say to ourselves to challenge unhelpful or negative thoughts. Ask your K-5 student to show you the moves! I am a problem solver. I stick with things and don’t give up. I am helpful and kind. I strive to do my best. I am enough.

LaPerche students enjoyed a mood boost today with Chef Reese from Chartwells. The kids were challenged to guess the five ingredients in a mystery food. LaPerche students are always so adventurous and without seeing the food, were ready for the challenge. They quickly realized the smell and taste were familiar and worked at their table to determine the five ingredients. Apples (from Steere Orchard), cinnamon, salt, brown sugar and the one ingredient that stumped them, lemon! Thank you, Chef Reece!

In preschool this morning, the weather reporter went to the window to check what was happening outside. He came back to the group and shared “rainy”. Mrs. Grieco helped him form a complete sentence and report out to the group that the weather outside was rainy today. LaPerche teachers have high expectations in all areas including public speaking and students rise to meet, and often exceed, them.

In second grade at LaPerche today, partners worked together to determine the main idea of the text they were reading. Then, they reread the text to find the key details that supported the main idea. Second graders know how to work together and give everyone an opportunity to share their thinking.

During Start with Hello Week at LaPerche, the third, fourth, and fifth grade students mixed it up at lunch to meet new friends. As students arrived at the lunch room door, they received a card with a number from 1 to 17. That number indicated which table would be their seat for the day. Fifth grade students were seated at the table, ready to lead the discussion so new friendships could be started. Start with Hello Week is a “national call to action week, dedicated to making new social connections and creating a sense of belonging among youth”. It is part of the Sandy Hook promise. LaPerche fourth and fifth graders worked in the garden with Mrs. Dorsey and Annie Bayer from Revive The Roots. They prepared the beds for fall plantings! They cleared the weeds from summer, composted the beds to feed the soil, applied mulch to insulate the earth, and planted spinach, beets and radishes to harvest this fall!! The kids learned so much and are excited to get back into the garden to taste all that they planted! Check out this link for more photos: https://photos.app.goo.gl/NQR6g7odshU2CE4F6

Open house at LaPerche was a smashing success! So many families visited the building where their children led them on a tour of the classrooms, the art room, the music room, the gym, the bake sale and the playground. The book fair was jumping, the gym was full of active families and the classrooms celebrated all that we do at LaPerche everyday. Thank you to all of the families who came out tonight! What was your favorite part of the evening?
